CHARTERED FINANCIAL ANALYST (CFA):
Schedule and Preparation:
CFA is a self study programme offered by CFA institute. It is a programme suitable for people who are pursuing their career/studies in finance and investment backgrounds. It consists of 3 levels which can be cleared one after the other. On successful completion of the programme the person becomes a CFA charterholder. There are certain pre requirements to become a CFA charterholder like the person should be a graduate and should have a particular work experience. CFA institute has its own Institute code of ethics and standards of professional conduct which is the document stating the guidelines of CFA. All CFAs are expected to follow these guidelines failing which the membership can be revoked.
Schedule:
CFA exam is conducted twice a year i.e. in December and in June. The December exam is valid only for Level 1 students. The June exam is open for all the levels. There are designated test centres across various cities around the world and the students can register their centre at any city.
Fee:
CFA institute charges fee for conducting the exams. The fee is to be paid in US dollars and in case of local currency the current exchange rate comes into effect. There are several early bird advantages that can be availed in form of low fee. The fee is different for different courses. CFA institute gives the option to students to opt out from the exam for medical reasons. But it doesn’t mean that a person can permanently opt out. The fee is non-refundable. Only the period of examination can be shifted on presentation of a medical certificate made by an authorised doctor.
Preparation books:
CFA institute provides preparation books in electronic form which is included in the course fee but if the student wants a printed version then that can be availed at additional cost. The books are revised every year and are very thorough. Some students find it hard to read the books. In that case leading book stores keep CFA books which are available at nominal costs. These books provide simplified topics but may not be reliable because these are not authorized by CFA institute.
How to prepare?
CFA preparation is one of the easiest preparations for any exam for the reason because of clearly defined syllabus and the clarity with which topics are covered in the books. CFA is a self preparation course and CFA institute doesn’t recommend any coaching centres. However, there are many coaching centres which provide CFA training on a weekday and weekend basis. Though it is better to avoid these coaching still if you are not confident than you can enrol in any of the leading institutes.
Calculator:
Purchase of a financial calculator is of utmost importance while pursuing CFA. The CFA institute recommends calculators of Texas Instruments (TI) and HP. There are 2 models in TI any of which can be purchased and there is just one model in HP. It is advisable to use TI calculators because of the ease of use and durability of TI as compared to HP. |
